Telecommuters cause resentment?

When a number of their co-workers toil away from the office by using
computers, cell-phones or other electronic equipment, those who do not
telecommute are more likely to be dissatisfied with their job and leave the
company, said Timothy Golden, a management professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute.

Three words: "deal with it". Telecommuting ain't going away, in fact just the opposite. Companies need to provide other perks in compensation to those who make the trek to the office.

It doesn't seem like companies will want to extra-compensate office workers who commute, being that they already cover the cost of heating and powering a building for them to work in. I'm not suggesting that companies slim down employee office space as much as airlines have cut services to save money, but it doesn't seem plausible to pay double for a commuter, when you can get a productive (and very happy) telecommuter for less. Some of the office worker complaints, listed by Golden, include receiving more assignments than telecommuters, and the belief that telecommuters work less. Now, I'm sure that envy is a factor when workers can't get out of the office and crave flexibility, but beyond that, contemporary technology can go a long way to remedying the complaints they list.

I am currently working for a free video messaging service called ooVoo which specifically has implemented technology that will help telecommuters communicate better with their offices. One great function is the ability to video conference with 6 people at once using a very low bandwidth on an easy to use platform. Additionally it does IMing, texting, voicemail, video email, ect. ect. If employers get used to using video chat instead of walking around the office floor, communication issues have the potential to be solved completely. Complaints should only be of envy at that point, so maybe more people will get the opportunity to telecommute.
