Women fired for starting rumor

Like to gossip at work? Better be careful, it could cost you your job! That's what happened to four women at the town offices of tiny Hooksett, NH. Hmm, didn't this happen in an episode of the Andy Griffith show?

48% Stretch the Truth, 10% Outright Lie on Their Resumes

The Monster Blog: "Here are the results...
  • 10% chose “Yes, I told a whopper.”
  • 48% chose “Not really, though I may have prettied-up the details a bit.”
  • 42% chose “No, my resume is the stone-cold truth.”
Now let’s look for a moment at the purpose of your resume. Your resume’s job is to get you an interview... But remember, there are ethics in marketing, and you need to have ethics in your job search, too.

Do you know how annoying it is to see former coworkers’ resumes that set their work and experience in a completely different light than the truth?... It’s always disconcerting to see someone taking credit for another’s work or inflating a title to encompass responsibilities well out of the person’s domain..."

Building a Brand Through Social Networks

Just as there are many facets to an individual, there are many sites that fall into the social networking category. Rather than putting all of their eggs in one basket, many savvy folks are creating profiles on multiple sites, taking advantage of the unique strengths of each. We believe this is a sound approach.
"With all that’s going on with social networking these days, we’re seeing a lot of figures leverage the popularity of social networks to gain visibility for themselves... One key takeaway from these guidelines is to remember that smaller, even niche social networks can be used to build up your presence in larger communities. A lot of smaller sites offer tools that will let you incorporate additional content that’s important for branding purposes, as well as ways to manage your overall web presence, offering compatible tie-ins with larger networks."

Of course, we feel Coworkers.com makes a great addition to your social networking strategy.

Survey shows what not to wear to work

Every once in a while you come across an article that just makes you go "well duh! you needed to do a survey to confirm the obvious?" Anyway, this one is good for a chuckle or two...

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Shopping for summer clothes to wear to work? Forget the tank tops and lose the flip-flops.

A new survey showed tank tops and visible underwear are the biggest fashion faux pas on the job, according to Monster, an online job and recruiting site, which compiled more than 18,000 responses to an online poll...

Here is an interesting tidbit...

Gaffin, who in her role at Monster provides advice to job seekers, says she tells people undergoing job interviews by telephone to dress professionally, even at home.

"You will have a different demeanor if you're wearing your pajamas versus if you're wearing clothes. If those things are reflected over the voice when people can't see you, what is it reflecting when they can?" she said.

Something tells me Ms. Gaffin has never telecommuted on a regular basis. Since when did being comfortable and relaxed imply a lack of professionalism? Who cares what the person on the other end of the phone or router is wearing, as long as they take their work seriously?

Oh, and for the record, the dress code here at the virtual office for Coworkers.com is "pajamas optional"... until we get the webcams working, that is!
